Franklin, OH -- The year was 1996 and Bob Westerfield was a community business owner. He was also the basketball team's weight lifting coach at his local high school, Springboro High School, in Springboro, Ohio. The head basketball coach, Troy Holtrey, was interested in getting a new score table for their gymnasium and shared the Power Ad Company brochure with Bob. The Power Ad Company was the "originator" of score tables (the tables where the scorekeepers sit on the sidelines of a gymnasium) back in 1988. Bob's eyes lit up when he saw a 24' table set in the catalog with two sets of tri-action displays on each side. This was the latest technology of the time and had only been previously purchased by colleges. Bob went to his friends in the community who owned businesses and asked for them to consider advertising on the tri-action displays. The table at that time could hold 6 eight foot advertisements. His plan was a success and the first Power Ad Company scoretable was delivered to a high school. Bob recalls the day it was delivered as "incredible". "Everyone was so excited and happy". When other schools in the area started calling, he knew it was the birth of a business. Bob named it Side Effects, Inc. and for 24 years he purchased scoretables exclusively from the Power Ad Company.

The relationship between Side Effects, Inc. and the Power Ad Company (affectionately called "Power Ad" all these years) has been wonderful. The Power Ad product was high quality and the customer service was such that if we ever needed help with a technical issue, we could get someone on the phone to help immediately. Over the years as the product technology changed to keep up with modern times, it was all very seamless. Power Ad continued to deliver a superior product and Side Effects had no problem giving their product to hundreds of schools.
In 2012, the company founder, Roger Naylor Sr., passed. It was at that point the Power Ad Company President (since 1991), Roger Naylor Jr. "Bud", and his sister, Vice President (since 1998), Deb Marseline, created a 10-year plan to retire from the Power Ad Company. When COVID-19 hit the US in the Spring of 2020, schools and campuses closed nationwide. They decided to close their doors permanently a few years earlier than planned.

This was very emotional news for Bob Westerfield and his wife, Jen, to hear. The Power Ad Company product, process and people had been part of Side Effect's DNA since day one. In the weeks that followed that news, discussions began on how Side Effects, Inc. could buy Power Ad Company and rebrand as such. This was something Bob and Jen were very interested in as a way to honor the Naylor family and carry on their strong company name and history. In July 2020, Bob and Jen Westerfield traveled to Salina, Kansas from Dayton, Ohio to finalize the purchase and reminisce.
